Building a zombie Commander deck on a budget
Last updated: September 27, 2026
Zombies are the most resilient budget tribe in Commander. The deck makes a lot of small bodies, drains the table when they die, and brings them back — which means the board wipe that ends most cheap decks is an inconvenience rather than a loss.
Win by draining, not by attacking
A wide board of 2/2s gets chump-blocked and swept. The zombie decks that actually close games do it with drain. Gray Merchant of Asphodel is the single best budget finisher in black — in a deck full of black mana symbols it routinely drains each opponent for four or more, and it does it again every time you return it.
Corpse Knight makes every zombie that enters cost each opponent a life. With a token engine running, that is the whole game plan and it does not care about blockers.
Making zombies for free
Cryptbreaker is a one-mana card that makes a zombie every turn and later converts three of them into three cards. It is the best budget card in the tribe and belongs in every list.
Gleaming Overseer pumps the team and gives your tokens hexproof, which blanks most targeted removal. Undead Augur draws a card every time a zombie dies — in a deck that sacrifices and recurs constantly, it is a draw engine that never stops.
Recursion is the tribe's edge
Hashaton, Scarab's Fist turns discarded cards into zombie copies of your best creatures. Moria Scavenger and Wight of the Reliquary both grind value out of the graveyard for a dollar or two.
A deck that recurs its threats does not need expensive ones. This is why zombies stay cheap without getting worse.
The board wipe you run yourself
Blasphemous Act costs one mana on a full board and is the cheapest wipe in the format. A zombie deck rebuilds from a token engine and a graveyard; most of the table does not. Running the wipe yourself is how you turn a stalled game into a winning one.
Removal and interaction
Path to Exile if you are in white, Despark and Void Rend for anything bigger. Our budget removal guide covers the rest.
Colours
Mono-black is cheap and complete. Dimir adds card draw and counterspells; Orzhov adds the best drain and removal. Browse the zombie singles in stock, or our black singles.
Price a list against live stock in the Deck Builder, browse all our Commander singles, or read budget aristocrats — the sacrifice shell overlaps heavily with this one.
