Mill in MTG: how the strategy works

Last updated: September 1, 2026

Mill is one of Magic's oldest alternate strategies: instead of reducing an opponent's life total, you empty their library. Do it fast enough and they simply run out of cards to draw.

How you win by milling

"Mill" means moving cards from the top of a library straight into the graveyard. The win condition is a rule everyone forgets until it happens to them: a player who has to draw from an empty library loses the game. So a mill deck doesn't need to attack at all — it grinds the opponent's deck down to zero and lets the draw step do the rest.

Where the name comes from

The term comes from Millstone, a card printed all the way back in Antiquities (1994) that put two cards per turn from a library into the graveyard. The strategy took the artifact's name and never let go.

Building a mill deck

Mill lives in blue, usually mono-blue or Dimir (blue-black). Because you're not racing on life total, pair the mill with control tools — counterspells and cheap removal — so you can survive long enough to finish the job. One thing to read at the table first: some decks want cards in their graveyard (reanimator, delve, graveyard combo). Against those opponents, milling can help them, so know the room before you commit. For the fundamentals of a tuned list, see our deckbuilding basics guide.
