Budget Commander staples: the cards every deck wants
Last updated: September 7, 2026
Every Commander deck, no matter the commander or the colours, wants the same handful of jobs done: accelerate your mana, draw extra cards, answer threats, and protect your commander. The good news for your wallet is that the cards that do those jobs are mostly commons and uncommons that cost very little — they've been reprinted so many times that a great deck's backbone can be built for the price of a couple of booster packs. Here are the staples we'd own first, by role.
Mana rocks: the cheapest speed you can buy
A "mana rock" is an artifact that makes mana. Playing one early is like skipping a turn ahead. Start with Sol Ring — it goes in essentially every deck — then Arcane Signet and Fellwar Stone, which fix whatever colours you need. The colour Signets, Talismans, and cheap options like Mind Stone and the Diamond cycle round out the package. Most are well under a dollar or two. Browse the lot in our colorless singles.
Ramp: search out lands (especially in green)
If your deck runs green, land-ramp is the most reliable acceleration there is, because it also fixes your colours and survives an artifact wipe. The budget all-stars: Cultivate, Kodama's Reach, Rampant Growth, Farseek, Nature's Lore, and the evergreen Sakura-Tribe Elder. A few dollars total buys most of them — see all our green singles.
Card draw: don't run out of gas
The deck that draws more cards usually wins. Cheap, colour-appropriate refills include Night's Whisper and Sign in Blood (black), Guardian Project and Elemental Bond (green creature decks), and colourless options like Mind's Eye. Aim for eight to ten draw sources across the deck.
Removal and interaction: cheap answers to anything
You want a spread of removal that can hit any permanent. The budget toolbox: Swords to Plowshares (white, the gold standard), Beast Within and Generous Gift (hit anything, any colour-ish), Chaos Warp (red's answer to everything), and a board wipe like Blasphemous Act. Five to eight interaction spells keeps a casual table honest.
Protection: keep your commander on the table
Your commander is your engine, so a couple of cheap protection pieces earn their slot. Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves give haste and hexproof/shroud for one mana each — a dollar or two very well spent.
The mana base: budget lands do most of the work
A smooth mana base is the difference between a deck that hums and one that stumbles, and you do not need expensive fetch lands to get there. The tapland and check-land cycles — things like Glacial Fortress and Sunken Hollow — plus utility lands such as Bojuka Bog, Myriad Landscape, and the ubiquitous Command Tower and Evolving Wilds cover most decks for pocket change.
How to buy them cheaply
Two tricks keep the bill down. First, buy non-foil — for a deck you're going to play, the finish doesn't matter and non-foil is always the value pick (see foil vs non-foil). Second, a played copy of a cheap card is often a fraction of the price and plays identically in a sleeve, so don't overpay for Near Mint on a bulk staple (our grading guide explains the steps). Most of this list lives in our singles under $5.
