The Commander Game Changers list
Last updated: October 7, 2026
Game Changers are the cards Wizards of the Coast has flagged as warping Commander games — the ones that, more than anything else, decide which bracket a deck belongs in. Brackets 1 and 2 allow none, bracket 3 allows up to three, and brackets 4 and 5 allow any number.
The list below has 53 cards, grouped by what they do. It is mirrored from the official data, and Wizards changes it a few times a year — cards come off as often as they go on — so treat the official announcement as the final word.
Fast mana
Cards that produce more mana than they cost, or produce it far earlier than a land would. Fast mana is the single biggest reason a deck moves up a bracket.
Ancient Tomb, Chrome Mox, Grim Monolith, Lion's Eye Diamond, Mana Vault, Mishra's Workshop, Mox Diamond, Gaea's Cradle and Serra's Sanctum.
Tutors
Cards that find a specific card. A deck that can reliably find its best card every game plays very differently from one that draws into it.
Demonic Tutor, Enlightened Tutor, Imperial Seal, Mystical Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Gamble, Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Crop Rotation, Intuition and Gifts Ungiven.
Card advantage engines
Cards that draw or generate resources every turn, often off the other players' actions.
Rhystic Study, Smothering Tithe, Necropotence, Consecrated Sphinx, The One Ring, Bolas's Citadel, Seedborn Muse, Notion Thief and Orcish Bowmasters.
Free spells, protection and combo pieces
Interaction that costs no mana, protection that stops a whole table's answers, and the cards that turn a combo into a win.
Fierce Guardianship, Force of Will, Teferi's Protection, Cyclonic Rift, Jeska's Will, Underworld Breach, Ad Nauseam and Thassa's Oracle.
Stax and denial
Cards that stop other players from playing the game — taxing spells, shutting off draws or searches, or locking the board.
Drannith Magistrate, Grand Arbiter Augustin IV, Narset, Parter of Veils, Opposition Agent, Humility, Tergrid, God of Fright, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Glacial Chasm and Braids, Cabal Minion.
Game-swinging cards
Single cards that end or reset a game on their own.
Coalition Victory, Biorhythm, Field of the Dead, Panoptic Mirror, Aura Shards and Farewell.
What the list is not
It is not a list of the best or most expensive cards. Plenty of strong cards are not on it — Sol Ring is played in almost every deck and is not a Game Changer — and some cards on it are cheap. The list targets cards that make games feel unfair or one-sided, which is a different question from power or price.
It is also not a ban list. Every card here is legal in Commander; the list only tells the table what to expect.
Building around the count
If your playgroup sits in bracket 3, the three slots are the most valuable in the deck — spend them on the card that does the most for your plan, usually an engine or a tutor, rather than on whatever you happened to own. If you play bracket 2, the list is the set of cards to leave out, and our budget staples are what goes in instead.
