Budget counterspells for Commander
Last updated: October 7, 2026
Counterspells are the most flexible interaction in blue — the only cards that answer something before it resolves. They are also some of the cheapest good cards in Commander: the best budget counters cost two mana and very little money.
How many to play
In a multiplayer game you cannot counter everything, and you should not try. Three to six counters is a normal range for a blue deck; save them for the spells that would win the game, wipe the board or break your plan. A counter held up all game for the right target is better than three spent on the wrong ones.
The cheap counters worth a slot
- Counterspell — Two blue mana, counter anything. Still the standard everything else is measured against.
- Arcane Denial — Counter anything for two; the caster draws two cards later and you draw one. In multiplayer the extra cards rarely matter.
- Swan Song — One mana, counters an instant, sorcery or enchantment, and gives its controller a 2/2 bird.
- An Offer You Can't Refuse — One mana, counters any noncreature spell; its controller gets two Treasures.
- Negate — Two mana for any noncreature spell. Reliable and cheap.
- Dovin's Veto — White-blue, two mana, can't be countered — the answer to counter wars.
- Mana Leak — Counter unless they pay three. Excellent early, weak late.
- Delay — Exiles the spell with suspend — it comes back three turns later, which is often too late.
- Disallow — Three mana to counter a spell, an activated ability or a triggered ability. Stops things nothing else can.
- Saw It Coming — Foretell it early, counter for two later.
- Absorb — Three mana, counter anything and gain 3 life.
- Lose Focus — Counter unless they pay two, with replicate to stop several spells.
- Didn't Say Please — Counter anything, and its controller mills three.
- Dispel — One mana, counters an instant. The cheapest way to win a counter war.
Worth the upgrade?
The expensive counters — Force of Will, Fierce Guardianship, Pact of Negation and Mana Drain — are better because they cost no mana or give mana back, not because they counter more. Force of Will and Fierce Guardianship are also Game Changers, which moves a deck up a bracket. For a bracket 2 or 3 deck the cheap list above does the job.
