Building an angel Commander deck on a budget

Last updated: September 27, 2026

Angels have a reputation for being expensive, and it is half-deserved. The famous angels cost real money. The tribe does not — most of what makes an angel deck function is cheap, and the headline cards are upgrades rather than requirements.

The curve problem, and the fix

Angels are a five-drop tribe. Left alone, that means four turns of doing nothing followed by one angel a turn, each of which gets answered on the way down. Two things fix it: ramp, and angels that cost less than five.

Giada, Font of Hope is the best budget card in the archetype — a two-mana angel that ramps toward other angels and grows the ones that arrive. Youthful Valkyrie and Angel of Vitality fill out the early curve for pocket change. Starnheim Aspirant makes every angel cheaper, which compounds.

Add Cultivate and a signet package — budget mana rocks covers it.

Lords worth the money

Lyra Dawnbringer is the budget lord that matters: it pumps the team, has lifelink and flying itself, and is very hard to attack into. Sephara, Sky's Blade costs seven on paper and almost never costs seven, and gives your whole board lifelink and indestructible.

Resplendent Angel makes a free angel every turn you gain five life, which in a lifelink deck is most turns. It is the engine the deck is quietly built around.

What to skip

Avacyn, Angel of Hope is the famous one and it is not a budget card. It also costs eight mana. A deck that ramps hard enough to cast her reliably is not a budget deck any more — skip her, and spend the same money on removal and ramp instead. The deck will win more.

Aurelia, the Warleader and Shalai, Voice of Plenty are the upgrades worth making first — Shalai in particular, because protecting the board is what keeps a slow tribe alive.

Removal and protection

White has the best removal in the game and it is cheap. Path to Exile and Generous Gift answer anything. Flawless Maneuver protects the whole board for free when your commander is out, which is the single best answer to a board wipe a budget deck has access to.

Colours

Mono-white is the cheapest build and works. Adding black gets you drain and better removal; adding red gets you Aurelia and haste. Browse the angel singles in stock, or our white singles.
