Building a dragon Commander deck on a budget

Last updated: September 27, 2026

Dragons are the tribe everyone wants to build and the one most likely to disappoint. The problem is not the price of dragons — plenty are cheap. It is that a deck of five and six drops spends most of the game doing nothing, and then loses the one dragon it managed to cast.

A good budget dragon deck spends its money on the cards that fix that, not on the dragons.

Cost reduction is the archetype

Dragonlord's Servant costs almost nothing and takes a mana off every dragon you cast. Ganax, Astral Hunter makes mana every time a dragon lands, which chains into the next one. Run both, plus Cultivate and Farseek.

Dragon's Hoard is the tribe's own mana rock and draws cards off your dragons. The Orbs of Dragonkind cycle is cheap fixing that discounts dragons on top.

The payoff that wins games

Dragon Tempest is the most important card in a budget dragon deck. It gives every dragon haste and deals damage equal to its flying power when it enters — which means your dragons stop being answered before they do anything, and the deck gains a way to win without combat.

Terror of the Peaks is the same effect on a body and is genuinely expensive; Dragon Tempest does most of the job for a fraction. Temur Ascendancy is the third haste-plus-draw option if you are in green.

Cheap dragons that pull their weight

Thrakkus the Butcher doubles the power of another dragon and gives it trample — with any haste effect that is a game-ending attack from an empty board. Bladewing the Risen returns a dragon from the graveyard, which is the recursion the deck needs after a wipe.

Korlessa, Scale Singer and Rivaz of the Claw are both cheap and both generate card advantage from dragons you already own.

Protect the board, then swing

Heroic Intervention is the premium protection. Crux of Fate is the tribal board wipe that leaves your dragons standing — a one-sided wipe for a couple of dollars is exactly the card a slow deck wants.

Colours

Red is mandatory; Jund or Temur are the common shells. A two-colour red-green build is far cheaper to mana-base and keeps the ramp. Browse the dragon singles in stock, or our red singles.
