How to upgrade a Commander precon on a budget
Last updated: September 7, 2026
A pre-constructed Commander deck — a "precon" — is the best-value way into the format: a ready-to-play 100-card deck for a fixed price. But precons are built to a budget and to be beginner-safe, so every one of them is a little slow and a little unfocused out of the box. The good news is that a handful of cheap, well-chosen swaps turns a precon from "fine" into "genuinely good" without rebuilding it. Here's the approach we recommend.
Change a few cards, not the whole deck
You don't need to gut a precon. Ten to fifteen swaps is plenty to feel the difference, and doing it a few cards at a time — as you play and notice what underperforms — keeps it affordable and teaches you the deck. Keep the commander and the cards that obviously support its plan; replace the filler.
What to cut
Precons are padded with vanilla creatures, overcosted "do-nothing" cards, and situational spells. The easiest cuts: seven-mana creatures that don't win the game, cards that only work in a specific matchup, and any effect you've never been happy to draw. If a card doesn't ramp, draw, remove, protect, or directly advance your commander's plan, it's a candidate.
What to add: the four upgrade pillars
Almost every precon is short on the same four things, and the fixes are cheap:
- More ramp. Add two or three mana rocks and, in green, land-ramp like Cultivate and Rampant Growth. Getting ahead on mana is the single biggest power boost.
- More card draw. Precons run too few. Two or three extra draw sources keep your hand full — see the picks in our budget staples guide.
- Better removal. Swap narrow answers for flexible ones like Swords to Plowshares, Beast Within, and Chaos Warp that can hit anything.
- Protection for your commander. A one-mana Swiftfoot Boots or Lightning Greaves keeps your engine online.
Our budget Commander staples guide is the full shopping list for all four pillars.
Fix the mana base
The cheapest real upgrade most precons want is better lands. Precons lean on lands that always enter tapped; swapping a few for check-lands and taplands that fix your colours (plus a Command Tower if it somehow isn't already in there) smooths out the stumbly early turns for very little money.
Tune the counts
A reliable target after upgrading: roughly 37 lands, 10 to 12 ramp pieces, 8 to 10 card-draw sources, 5 to 8 removal spells, and the rest payoffs. Hit those numbers and the deck plays consistently even when the individual cards are inexpensive — the same skeleton we use in building your first Commander deck on a budget.
Do it against live stock
Once you know the cards you want to add, paste them into our Deck Builder — it prices the whole list against what we actually have in stock and adds it to your cart in one go, so you can see the upgrade cost before you commit. Most upgrade packages come in around the price of the precon itself or less.
