Budget landfall payoffs for Commander
Last updated: September 21, 2026
Landfall triggers whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control. It is one of the most budget-friendly archetypes in Commander, because the engine pieces are lands — which you were playing anyway — and the expensive enablers have cheap substitutes that work nearly as well.
The two halves
A landfall deck needs payoffs that trigger, and enablers that trigger them more than once a turn. Most new builds over-invest in payoffs and under-invest in enablers, and then wonder why the deck feels like a normal green deck with extra text.
One land drop a turn is one trigger a turn. The decks that feel unfair are getting three or four.
Extra land drops: the real engine
Effects that let you play additional lands each turn are what convert a pile of payoffs into a threat. Exploration and Burgeoning are the premium versions; the budget ones do the same job a turn later. Anything that reads "you may play an additional land" belongs in the deck.
Pair them with ways to draw lands — Cultivate and Kodama's Reach put a land onto the battlefield, which is a trigger, and stock the next one in hand.
Fetch lands without the price tag
A fetch land is two triggers for one card. The famous ones are expensive; the cheap ones are not. Evolving Wilds, Terramorphic Expanse and Fabled Passage all crack for a basic and trigger landfall twice for pennies. In a landfall deck these are not budget compromises — they are the correct cards.
Myriad Landscape fetches two at once. Our budget utility lands guide covers the rest of the mana base.
Payoffs worth the slot
The cheap payoffs come in three shapes: make a creature or token on each landfall, grow your board on each landfall, or drain the table on each landfall. Pick the one that matches how you intend to win — a deck running all three usually does none of them well enough to close.
The trap is expensive payoffs with a single trigger. A six-mana card that does something nice once is worse than a two-mana card that does something small four times.
Colours
Green is the heart of it — extra land drops, land ramp, and the best payoffs all live there. Red and white add token and damage payoffs; blue adds the card draw. A green deck with a small second colour is the usual shape. Browse our green singles and the landfall singles we have in stock.
