Collector Boosters vs Play Boosters: what's inside
Last updated: October 22, 2026
Every new Magic: The Gathering set comes in two main kinds of booster. Play Boosters are built for playing — drafting, sealed, opening a few with friends. Collector Boosters are built for collecting: almost every card is foil or an alternate version, and they carry the set's rarest cards. They cost several times more, and they contain several times more of what collectors want.
The short version
- Play Booster — 14 cards. At least one rare or mythic, one foil, mostly commons and uncommons. The pack you draft with.
- Collector Booster — 15 cards. Nearly all foil, about five rares or mythics, plus the set's special treatments: borderless, extended art, showcase frames and alternate foils. Serialized cards, when a set has them, are found only here.
- Boxes — a Collector Booster box holds 12 packs; a Play Booster box holds 30.
The exact slots change from set to set, and Wizards of the Coast publishes them in a "Collecting" article for each release. Two current examples:
Example: Reality Fracture
A Reality Fracture Collector Booster holds 15 cards plus an art card or a foil double-sided token:
- 4 traditional foil commons and 2 traditional foil uncommons
- 3 traditional foil uncommon echoed pairs (two of them from the same pair)
- 1 traditional foil tower basic land
- 1 traditional foil rare or mythic
- 3 non-foil rare or mythic alternate versions: braintwister, Commander extended art, borderless echoed pairs, shattered mirror, sculptor's stronghold, portal view lands and more
- 1 foil rare or mythic alternate version — the slot that can hold a facet foil shattered mirror card or the serialized Bloodline Recollector (500 copies, under 1% of packs)
Its Play Booster, by contrast, is mostly commons and uncommons: 3 echoed pairs, one rare or mythic, one foil of any rarity and a land. Our Reality Fracture set guide covers the cards themselves.
Example: The Hobbit
A Hobbit Collector Booster has 5 traditional foil commons, 4 foil uncommons, a traditional foil Middle-earth journey basic land, 2 traditional foil rares or mythics, 2 non-foil alternate versions, 1 foil alternate version and an art card or foil token. The alternate versions include Dragon hoard frames, book cover cards, scene cards, extended art, Middle-earth classic artist cards and five mythics printed in Dwarvish. The headline card, a gleaming gold Smaug the Magnificent (about 500 printed), sits in that last foil slot. Every Collector and Play Booster box also includes a box topper with a foil Middle-earth classic artist card.
Which should you buy?
- To draft or play sealed: Play Boosters. That is what they are designed for, and Collector Boosters are not balanced for limited.
- To chase foils, alternate art or a serialized card: Collector Boosters. The special versions are either only in Collector Boosters or far more common there.
- To build a deck: neither — buy the singles. A booster is a random selection; if you know which cards your deck needs, buying them directly is cheaper and certain. Our Deck Builder prices a whole list at once.
- As a gift: a Collector Booster is the more exciting single pack to open. See our gift guide for more ideas.
Opening packs is fun in its own right; just don't buy boxes expecting to come out ahead on the cards inside. Treat it as entertainment, and buy singles for the cards you actually need.
