The best budget commanders
Last updated: October 7, 2026
A budget commander is not a weak one. It is a commander whose plan runs on cards that are cheap because there are a lot of them — common creature types, sacrifice fodder, defenders — so the deck can be strong without buying the format's expensive staples. Each of these has an upgrade page listing the cards we have in stock for it.
Ten commanders that build cheaply
- Krenko, Mob Boss — Mono-red goblins. Tap to make goblins equal to the goblins you have, so the army doubles every turn. Cheap goblins are everywhere.
- Giada, Font of Hope — Mono-white angels. Every angel enters bigger, and Giada pays for them. Angels are one of the cheapest tribes to fill.
- Lathril, Blade of the Elves — Black-green elves. Makes elves when it connects, and ten elves drain the table for 10. Elves are plentiful and cheap.
- Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver — Blue-black zombies. Zombies that die come back as decayed tokens, and Wilhelt turns them into cards. A grindy deck that rewards cheap creatures.
- Teysa Karlov — White-black aristocrats. Death triggers happen twice, and tokens gain vigilance and lifelink. The sacrifice engine runs on commons.
- Isshin, Two Heavens as One — Mardu attack triggers. Every attack trigger happens twice. Cheap creatures with attack triggers become twice as good.
- Meren of Clan Nel Toth — Black-green graveyard value. Creatures that die build experience, and Meren brings one back every end step. Built from cheap value creatures.
- Arcades, the Strategist — Bant walls. Defenders draw cards and attack using toughness. Walls are some of the cheapest cards in Magic.
- Alela, Cunning Conqueror — Blue-black faeries. Casting on other players' turns makes faeries, and faeries that connect goad the table into fighting each other.
- Captain N'ghathrod — Blue-black mill. Takes the best creatures and artifacts your mill puts into opponents' graveyards each turn.
What makes a deck cheap
- The plan uses many interchangeable cards. A tribal deck needs thirty creatures of a type, not thirty specific creatures — any of them works.
- The commander is the engine. When the commander supplies the card advantage or the win, the rest of the deck can be ordinary.
- No Game Changers needed. Every deck here plays well in bracket 2, which is where most tables sit.
Spend on the shell, not the stars
Whatever the commander, the money that matters goes on ramp, removal and card draw first: Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, and the cards in our budget staples, cheap removal and card draw guides. Then fill the theme.
